Washington, D.C. – On May 11, Congresswoman Norma J. Torres (CA-35) introduced the “Mudslide Recovery Act,” legislation directing the Departments of Interior and Homeland Security to establish a pilot grant program to address damage from mudslides. These highly destructive debris flows can occur both immediately and years after wildfires in response to intense rainfall, often with little warning. Mudslides strip vegetation, block drainage ways, damage homes and infrastructure, and endanger human life.

“Mudslides, floods, and fires are putting Californians in danger, and having lost my own home to a fire, I know how hard it is to get back on your feet after a disaster. The Mudslide Recovery Act will help families and businesses rebuild after a mudslide by providing them with the resources they need,” said Congresswoman Torres. “As a member of the House Committee on Appropriations, I am committed to ensuring Congress invests in resources to address the damage from disasters like mudslides. I look forward to working with my Democratic and Republican colleagues alike to deliver on this funding for communities in need.”

Areas impacted by frequent wildfires are particularly prone to mudslides and other debris flows. Last year, Southern California suffered one of the three largest fires in state history, and in the aftermath, homes and other buildings were damaged due to mudslides.

Congresswoman Torres recently led over 30 Members of Congress to introduce a resolution in recognition of Wildfire Preparedness Week. The resolution aims to increase public awareness about wildfires nationally.
